Glad you like Melchers, too. Each month this year begins with a woodcut by the Belgian artist Franz Melchers and is taken from a book by Thomas Braun titled L'An (The Year. I posted on article on January 5, 2012 "Franz Melchers and Japonisme In Belgium. There is also an article about author Thomas Braun on wikipedia.fr. A few years ago I was able to look at the original book from 1897 at New York University Library. I t is a large square volume and the qulaity of the color is outstanding.
The red chair and the green chair don't have the same number of slats in their backs, either. No matter how much detail Melchers included in an image it never seems cluttered.
Hi I am looking for more information about Franz Melchers and particularly about his wife Emilie-Jeanne (Dommartin) Melchers who belong to my family. Olivier.
I will share any more information that I can find about Melchers, as I, too, am curious. I suggest that you also contact Neil Philip at Idbury Prints (Adventures In The Print Trade) as he is located in the U.K. and may have sources of information that a New Yorker like me doesn't. Best of luck.
